Gielow Residence                                              5100 sf, 2 story, five bedroom

Festus, MO

Situated on the point of a new 100-acre lake, the Gielow Residence is designed to entertain. A heavy-timber porte-cochere leads to the foyer which provides a vista of the lake beyond the main living area. Its horseshoe-shaped plan enhances panoramic views across the lake from all living spaces. A screened breezeway between the main house and the 6-car garage provides outdoor living & dining opportunities; it includes a kitchen and fireplace and serves as the entrance to a 2-bedroom Guest House above the garage. The lake provides heating and cooling through a water-source heat pump, so energy use is minimized.

Brotherton Fedder Residence                      5300 sf, 2 ½ story, five bedroom

Olivette, MO

This project began with the client’s desire to design something fun and unpretentious. Located in a ranch-style neighborhood, this relatively large house was designed to reinforce the existing streetscape. Their “No McMansion!” urging prompted a low-slung design which when viewed from the street appears one-story. This soft massing was achieved by building the second floor bedrooms into the roof line. The street façade is a contemporary brick veneer design which features a glass gable at the entrance. The colorful, open-plan brings the family together.

Burke Residence                                                  4580 sf, 2 story, six bedroom

St. Charles, MO

The client’s large family and specific objectives influenced the design of this house. A simple, rectangular floor plan helped contain costs while satisfying their needs. A heavy timber front porch faces both streets of the corner lot. The heavy timber theme continues inside to spacious, vaulted Living, Dining & Kitchen areas. Hang-out spaces for the teens, an over-sized laundry room and indoor/outdoor entertainment areas support busy lifestyles.

Reddish brick with matching mortar imparts a clean, contemporary look to this one and a half story home. Square brick columns, a decorative brick gable and glass doors emphasize the strong, simple entrance. The casual flowing floor plan is reinforced with tall ceilings and large windows. A sunny, second floor recreation space for the children is located in the steep hip roof.

A vaulted ceiling extends from a tall clerestory window above the entry Foyer to the back of the house. The vaulted ceiling frames Family Room atrium windows overlooking a walk-out lower level. A generous covered porch across the front of the house welcomes guests and encourages the fine art of “porch-stooping”.

Jefferson College House                                 1650sf, 1 story, three bedroom

Hillsboro, MO

One of our more modest and most interesting projects was to design a spec ranch house for Jefferson College's Advanced Carpentry program in which their carpentry students build the houses. They needed a design supportive of today’s lifestyles and attuned to a competitive real estate market. It needed to be salable for the College and buildable for the students. The result is a simple, flowing, contemporary design which incorporates modern energy-conscious features including entry vestibules, increased insulation, a ground-source heat pump heating and cooling system and photo-voltaic solar collectors.

Price Residence                                                  6500 sf, 1 story, six bedroom

Antonia, MO

The design process for this project began with a hike along the creek amid a 70-acre tract of forest in the rolling hills of Missouri. The owners wanted to build a house with plenty of room for visiting children and grandchildren; a home where all could gather for the holidays. We selected an area on the side of a slope near a ravine; a nearby flat would be a good spot to stable the horses. A new dam would create a 3-acre lake at the toe of the building site. Living spaces on the main floor were designed to connect to a deck and screen porch with views of the lake. Four lower level guest suites walk out onto a patio overlooking the lake. The main level Master Suite has a private screen porch just steps from the ravine. A home office with a view of the lake has its own ground floor entrance.

Private Residence                                              2400 sf, 2 story, four bedroom

St. Charles County, MO

Mullioned glass cabinets, decorative tile and an apron-front kitchen sink keep this weekend cottage authentically rustic. White beaded style cabinet doors and a butcher-block countertop complete the look. Herbs grow on the deep granite window sill. The B&B inspired Master Suite features a stone fireplace and vertical battens on painted wood walls. French doors open to a wood porch overlooking the pond. Built-in wardrobes frame window seats in the guest bedrooms which afford lush views to the wooded countryside.

Private Residence                                          3600 sf, 1 ½ story, five bedroom

St. Louis, MO

This one and a half story home keeps a low eave line by locating the three second floor bedrooms in dormers. The combination of a low eave and a hip roof soften the mass of the structure. Brick and stone are blended on the street elevation to further soften the look. The ground floor Master Suite opens to a private, covered deck. A spacious screen porch adjoining the Family Room provides indoor-outdoor entertainment opportunities.

Stephens Developments, LLC                           4280 sf, 2 story, five bedroom

St. Louis, MO

The ground contours and utility easement which angle across the site influenced the layout of this two story house. The resultant saw-tooth footprint and stepped roof serve to soften its mass and add visual interest. Prairie style influences are seen in its wide overhangs, casement windows and buff color brick. A second floor Recreation Loft overlooks a large open living space. A main level Guest Suite adjoining the Foyer can serve as home office.

Stewart Residence                                              2900 sf, 2 story, four bedroom

Wildwood, MO

The Stewart residence is built on a 4-acre lot which backs to Tavern Creek in Wildwood. The Family Room and a large Breakfast bay face a wooded hillside across the creek. The massing is strong, straight-forward and symmetrical. A wide front porch is tucked beneath the main roof structure which is supported by stone porch columns. Dormers bring daylight into three 2nd floor bedrooms which are built into the roof structure. A Study/Gameroom is built into the garage roof.

Wolfe Residence                                                 3600 sf, 1 story, four bedroom

Olivette, MO

The owners decided to raze their 50’s slab house and build a new home on the same site. A pleasing composition of brick and stone provides welcoming curb appeal to their new cottage style ranch. Brick arches and a custom casement window highlight the traditional façade. A vaulted ceiling in the Family Room extends into the adjoining screen porch. Knotty-pine planks were salvaged from the original house and installed on the vaulted ceiling.
